Nephrology and Dialysis Service

The Nephrology and Dialysis Service has 20 stations for haemodialysis treatments, an outpatient Nephrology Unit (for peritoneal dialysis and assessment of kidney and hypertensive conditions) and an outpatient Unit for kidney transplant patients. There are also some dedicated stations for patients who require clinical isolation.

Kidney function replacement techniques

  • Online haemodialysis or haemo(dia)filtration
  • Bicarbonate dialysis
  • Single-needle dialysis (for patients with problematical vascular access)
  • Extracorporeal anticoagulation haemodialysis (with citrate in the extracorporeal line for patients at high risk of bleeding)
  • Haemodialysis with HCO filters (for patients with acute kidney failure in multiple myeloma)
  • Manual (CAPD) or automated (APD) peritoneal dialysis
  • Preparation of vascular or peritoneal access

Diagnostic and therapeutic nephrological services

  • Definitive diagnosis and treatment of arterial hypertension including 24-hour ambulatory monitoring and advice in the case of (pre)eclampsia
  • Definitive diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases including kidney biopsy in collaboration with the radiology departments
  • Definitive diagnosis and treatment of electrolyte and metabolic disorders
  • Definitive diagnosis and prevention of kidney stones
  • Assessment of patients with severe kidney failure and preparation for kidney transplant
  • Monitoring of kidney transplant patients in collaboration with major Swiss university centres
  • Consultation with a nurse on dialysis techniques (haemodialysis versus peritoneal dialysis)
  • Specialist team, available 24/24, in collaboration with the internal medicine department
